Mtsvivani Kakhuri

Rare white of Kakheti

Mtsvivani Kakhuri

Mtsvivani Kakhuri is a rare Kakhetian white grape; the name is linked to the word for «to shed» (mtsviva), after the small berries' tendency to drop at ripening. Historically it belonged to local field blends.

It gives a fresh white with good acidity and delicate aromatics; in qvevri, pale amber wines. Today the variety is being restored in collection vineyards and by small growers.

Mtsvivani is part of Kakheti's rich pool of white varieties, most of which survived the Soviet monoculture only in ampelographic collections.
