Kumsi Shavi

Black form of Kumsi (Kakheti)

Kumsi Shavi

Kumsi Shavi («black Kumsi») is the dark-berried form of the Kakhetian grape Kumsi, preserved as a collection variety. The berries are dark blue and medium-sized, with skin that separates easily; the juice is pale pink.

It gives a table red wine of weak colour, medium body and low alcohol, with a pleasant, harmonious taste and only faintly expressed varietal aroma. In style it is a light, pale red.

Today Kumsi Shavi is found mainly in ampelographic collections; interest in such rare varieties grows as Kakhetian viticulture revives.
