Chkhaveri and qvevri in the hills above Batumi

The Adjarian Wine House stands in the village of Adjaristskali in the Khelvachauri municipality, some twenty kilometres from Batumi on the road into the mountains. It opened in 2010 on the site of an eighteenth-century marani.
Under one roof there are the vineyard, the winery, an enotheque, a qvevri cellar, tasting rooms and a restaurant of Adjarian cooking. The flagship wine is the rosé chkhaveri under the Porto Franco label: dry, semi-sweet and qvevri-made. The European range comes from rkatsiteli and tsolikouri, and tsolikouri also goes into qvevri.
Guests are shown the vineyard and the cellar, with tastings and master classes: opening a qvevri, folding khinkali, making churchkhela, baking bread, making Adjarian cheese, treading grapes and distilling chacha, rolling a Georgian cigar from Adjarian mountain tobacco. Open from eleven in the morning to ten at night.
