A German table in Asureti, the former Elisabethtal
Until 1921 Asureti was called Elisabethtal: the colony was founded in 1818 by Swabian settlers, and their houses with high gables still stand along the main street. Bahnhof Station occupies one of those old stone houses, and the name points to the railway that once carried people from here to Tiflis.
The cooking is German: handmade sausages, the Asureti pretzel and their own Bahnhof beer; the cooks are local, many of them from Racha. There is a beer garden, a coworking space and cottages, and an Oktoberfest in autumn. About forty minutes from Tbilisi, and the trip pairs naturally with the essay on the two communities of Asureti.
