Tavkveri

Light red of Kartli

Tavkveri

Tavkveri is a red grape of central Georgia (Kartli), giving light, fresh wines with low tannin — a Georgian answer to «gluggable» Burgundian-style reds. The variety has only a female flower, so it is planted beside pollinators.

Tavkveri wines are pale and berry-driven (wild strawberry, cherry), with lively acidity; they are drunk young and lightly chilled. It is increasingly made into rosé and light qvevri wines too.

Tavkveri is a good reminder that Georgian red is not only the powerful Saperavi.
