Chacha

Grape pomace spirit

Chacha is a strong grape spirit, Georgia's cousin of grappa and rakia. It is distilled from grape pomace (the skins, seeds and stems left after winemaking), and sometimes from unripe or surplus grapes. It usually runs 40–65% ABV.

Chacha is traditionally home-distilled in almost every winemaking family, especially after the rtveli (harvest). The best examples are smooth and aromatic, with notes of fruit and vine, and are increasingly bottled as branded, single-variety products.

In Georgian culture chacha is not only a drink but a folk remedy «for everything» and an essential part of the feast and of hospitality.
