Battle of Krtsanisi

Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar defeats Erekle II's army and burns Tbilisi.

1795

In September 1795 the Persian Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar invaded eastern Georgia to punish Erekle II for his alliance with Russia.

In the three-day battle of Krtsanisi near Tbilisi a small Georgian force resisted desperately but was defeated; the city was sacked and burned, and thousands carried off into captivity.

The Krtsanisi catastrophe was one of the most tragic events in Georgian history and hastened the annexation by Russia.
