In 1801, by the manifestos of Paul I and Alexander I, the kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti was abolished and annexed to the Russian Empire.
The Bagrationi dynasty lost its throne, contrary to the Treaty of Georgievsk; eastern Georgia was followed by the western Georgian lands.
Thus Georgian statehood was interrupted for more than a century; the country became part of the empire but kept its language, church and dream of independence.
