In 1832 Georgian nobles formed a conspiracy to restore independence and return the throne to the Bagrationis.

Prominent aristocrats and Romantic poets took part; the plan was to overthrow the Russian administration in Tbilisi.

The conspiracy was uncovered and suppressed and its members exiled; but it showed the vitality of the idea of national independence in the imperial age.
