The kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti accepts the protectorate of the Russian Empire.

On 24 July 1783, at the fortress of Georgievsk, Erekle II signed a treaty of protectorate with Russia: eastern Georgia passed under the protection of the Russian Empire.
Russia guaranteed the integrity of the kingdom and the Bagrationi dynasty; Erekle renounced other dependence and coordinated foreign policy with St Petersburg.
Yet in 1795 Russia did not come to the rescue during the invasion of Agha Mohammad Khan; the treaty remained an unfulfilled promise.
