Erekle II (1720–1798) in 1762 united Kartli and Kakheti into a single East Georgian kingdom and became one of the most outstanding Georgian rulers of the modern era.
He strengthened the state, reformed the army, developed the economy and sought security from Iran and Turkey by seeking alliance with Russia.
He was called the «Little Kakhetian» (Patara Kakhi); both the rise and the tragedy of late-18th-century eastern Georgia are bound up with his name.
