In 1122, a year after Didgori, David IV took Tbilisi, which had been under a Muslim emirate for more than four centuries.
The king moved his capital here from Kutaisi, showing religious tolerance and preserving the rights of the city's Muslims, Jews and Armenians.
The recovery of Tbilisi completed the gathering of the Georgian lands and was the culmination of David the Builder's reign.
