Giorgi Saakadze (the Great Mouravi) was a Georgian commander of the early 17th century who led the struggle against Iranian domination.
In 1625 he raised a revolt and defeated the Persian army at the battle of Martqopi, thwarting Shah Abbas I's plan to exterminate and deport the Georgians.
Although the revolt was ultimately crushed, Saakadze became a symbol of resistance; his contradictory fate inspired Georgian literature and cinema.
