Bakhtrioni uprising

The people of Kakheti rise against the settlement of Turkic nomadic tribes on their lands.

1659

In 1659 the Kakhetians, Tush, Khevsur and Pshav peoples rose in the Bakhtrioni uprising against Iranian rule.

The highlanders took the fortress of Bakhtrioni and drove out the Turkic nomads whom the shah had settled to replace Kakheti's Georgian population.

The uprising thwarted the colonisation of Kakheti and preserved its Georgian character; it is celebrated in folk legend and poetry.
