The Ottomans and Safavids divide Georgia into spheres of influence: the west to the Ottomans, the east to Iran.

By the Peace of Amasya in 1555 the Ottoman Empire and Safavid Iran for the first time formally divided Georgia between them.
Western Georgia (Imereti) fell into the Ottoman sphere, eastern Georgia (Kartli and Kakheti) into Iran's; the border ran straight through the Georgian lands.
The partition fixed the dependence of the Georgian kingdoms on the two Muslim powers for more than two centuries.
