Breakup of the unified kingdom

By the late 15th century Georgia splits into the kingdoms of Kartli, Kakheti and Imereti and several principalities.

1466

By 1466 the united kingdom of Georgia had finally broken up into three kingdoms (Kartli, Kakheti and Imereti) and the principality of Samtskhe.

Bagrationis ruled each of them but feuded among themselves; the country lost strength before new neighbours, the Ottoman Empire and Safavid Iran.

A long period of fragmentation, vassalage and struggle for the survival of Georgian statehood began.
