In 1226 the Khwarazmshah Jalal ad-Din Mangburni, pressed by the Mongols, invaded Georgia and seized Tbilisi.
The city was sacked and many inhabitants died refusing to renounce Christianity; it was a heavy blow to the country.
Jalal ad-Din's invasion weakened Georgia on the eve of the Mongol conquest and was a prologue to the end of the golden age.
