George V the Brilliant (r. 1299–1302 and 1314–1346) managed to restore Georgia's unity and independence as Mongol rule waned.
He expelled the Mongols, brought Imereti and Samtskhe back under his authority, restored order and issued a law code, the «Statute of George the Brilliant».
Under him the country enjoyed a brief revival; George even secured rights for Georgians at the holy places in Jerusalem.
