In the mid-13th century Georgia had two kings named David: David VII Ulu ruled eastern Georgia under the Mongols, while David VI Narin established himself in the west.
David Narin separated the kingdom of Imereti with its capital at Kutaisi, where Mongol power was weaker.
Thus the united kingdom effectively split into eastern and western Georgia, a division that would last for centuries.
