David IV founds Gelati Monastery and Academy, a centre of learning and culture.
1106
In 1106 David IV founded the Gelati monastery with its academy near Kutaisi, the greatest spiritual and scholarly centre of medieval Georgia.
At Gelati classical philosophy and theology were translated and expounded; contemporaries called it a «new Athens» and a «second Jerusalem».
David the Builder himself is buried here; the Gelati ensemble is on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
