Lado Gudiashvili

1896–1980

In 1919–1925 Lado Gudiashvili lived in Paris, exhibited alongside the École de Paris and befriended Modigliani and returned to Tbilisi with a fantastic world of his own: languid «peri» maidens, feasts, beasts, irony and grace.

In 1946–1947 he painted the altar of Kashveti church and paid for it with persecution in Soviet years, yet remained Tbilisi's best-loved painter; later he was named a People's Artist of the USSR.
