The largest collection in Guria

The museum was founded on 1 April 1936 and remains the largest in Guria. The holdings exceed six thousand items, the earliest of them assigned to the ninth millennium BC.

The chronology is densely covered: the Neolithic, the Colchian culture of the early, middle and late Bronze Age, grave goods of the Iron Age, ancient silver and gold, numismatics, the ethnography of Guria and archival books.

Among its rarities the museum counts a sword linked to Napoleon Bonaparte. Next door is a folklore centre: the polyphony of Guria belongs to the living tradition of Georgian singing, inscribed by UNESCO on its list of intangible heritage.
