In August 1924 an uprising against Soviet power broke out across Georgia, prepared by an underground committee for independence.
It was quickly and brutally crushed; thousands were killed or shot and many sent to the camps.
The August uprising was one of the largest anti-Soviet revolts in the 1920s USSR and a symbol of resistance.
