In March 1956 mass demonstrations took place in Tbilisi, triggered by the denunciation of Stalin at the 20th Congress of the CPSU.
The protests, which began as a defence of national dignity, grew into demands for greater freedom; on 9 March troops opened fire on the demonstrators.
Dozens were killed; the events of 1956 were an early awakening of the Georgian national movement in the Soviet era.
