Abolition of serfdom

In the 1860s serfdom is abolished in the Georgian provinces.

1864

In the 1860s–1870s serfdom was abolished in the Georgian provinces of the Russian Empire (in the Tiflis province in 1864).

The reform freed the peasants, but they had to pay redemption for land; the terms were harsh and caused discontent.

The abolition of serfdom hastened social change, the growth of towns and the formation of a new Georgian intelligentsia and working class.
