On 26 May 1918 independence is proclaimed; the First Georgian Republic is established.

On 26 May 1918 the National Council proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Georgia, the first modern Georgian state after more than a century's interruption.
The republic adopted a democratic constitution (1921), carried out land reform, gave women the vote and developed Georgian-language education.
The young state was short-lived: in February–March 1921 it was occupied by the Red Army.
