The Supreme Council adopts the Act of Restoration of the State Independence of Georgia.

On 9 April 1991 the Supreme Council of Georgia adopted the Act of Restoration of State Independence, resting on the 1918 act.
The decision was confirmed by a referendum in which an overwhelming majority voted for independence; Zviad Gamsakhurdia became the first president.
Thus, after 70 years of Soviet rule, Georgia became an independent state again, but hard years of conflict and civil war lay ahead.
