Under King Mirian III and the preaching of St Nino, Christianity becomes the state religion of Kartli (Iberia).
326
Around 326 King Mirian III and his wife Nana adopted Christianity through the preaching of St Nino of Cappadocia, and it became the state religion of Kartli (Iberia).
Georgia thus became one of the first countries in the world to adopt Christianity officially, soon after Armenia and almost at the same time as the Roman Empire.
The first church was founded at Mtskheta, on the site of the future Svetitskhoveli; Christianity shaped the country's script, culture and whole later history.
