Victories at Shamkor and Basiani

Georgia defeats the Seljuks at Shamkor (1195) and Basiani (1203), expanding its reach.

1203

Under Tamar the Georgian army won two brilliant victories: at Shamkor (1195) over the atabeg of Azerbaijan and at Basiani (c. 1203) over the sultan of Rum.

These victories confirmed Georgia's hegemony in the Near East and secured its southern frontiers.

Military supremacy underpinned Tamar's «pan-Caucasian» power, which reached far beyond the Georgian lands proper.
