Bagrat III, the unified Kingdom of Georgia

Bagrat III unites the western and eastern Georgian lands into a single kingdom.

1008

In 1008 Bagrat III Bagrationi united western Georgia (the kingdom of Abkhazia) and eastern Georgia, creating for the first time a single Georgian kingdom.

He inherited the crowns of Abkhazia and Kartli through kinship, then annexed Kakheti and Hereti; Kutaisi became the capital and the Bagrati Cathedral the symbol of the age.

Thus ended the centuries-long road to unification begun in Tao-Klarjeti; the country stood on the threshold of its golden age.
