Kato Mikeladze

Georgia's first feminist, journalist

1878–1942

Kato Mikeladze studied in Europe and devoted her life to the struggle for women's rights. In 1917 she founded the newspaper «Voice of the Georgian Woman», the first publication in Georgia wholly devoted to the women's question.

She campaigned for women's suffrage; in 1918 the Democratic Republic of Georgia became one of the first countries where women gained the vote.
