Tengiz Abuladze was one of the greatest Georgian film directors. His philosophical cinema fused parable, history and conscience.

World fame came with the trilogy The Plea (1967), The Wishing Tree (1977) and Repentance (1984). Repentance, a film about Stalinist repression, became a symbol of perestroika and won the Grand Prix at the 1987 Cannes Festival. He had begun in cinema with the short film Magdana's Donkey (1955), after a story by Ekaterine Gabashvili.
