The painter's studio

The house-museum opened in 1976, a year after the artist's death, in her flat-studio on Kiacheli Street, where Elene Akhvlediani lived and worked from 1938 to 1975.

Inside everything stayed as it was: the studio, the furniture, her own collection of folk ceramics and copper vessels, photographs, letters. The holdings run to more than 3,200 items, including canvases, pastels and graphic work.

Akhvlediani studied in Paris, worked for the theatre and painted Tbilisi all her life — crooked streets, balconies, courtyards. Her city views hang in the very rooms where they were painted, which is a rare thing: to see a picture where it was made.
