Conflict in Samachablo (South Ossetia)

The conflict over the Tskhinvali region (Samachablo): the war of 1991–1992 and the Russo-Georgian War of August 2008, after which Russia recognised the region's independence.

1991

The first armed conflict in the Tskhinvali region (in Georgian, Samachablo) took place in 1991–1992 and ended with the Sochi ceasefire agreement (June 1992) and the deployment of joint peacekeeping forces.

In August 2008 the escalation turned into the Russo-Georgian ('Five-Day') War. On 26 August 2008 Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Georgia and most of the world's states regard the Tskhinvali region (Samachablo) as a territory occupied by Russia.
