Kakutsa Cholokashvili

Officer, leader of the 1924 uprising

1888–1930

Kaikhosro «Kakutsa» Cholokashvili (1888–1930) was an officer and a national hero of Georgia. Born at Matani in Kakheti into a princely family, he studied at the Tiflis Gymnasium for Nobility, then directed by the historian Ekvtime Takaishvili.

After the Soviet invasion of 1921 Cholokashvili took to the mountains and waged a guerrilla campaign in Kakheti. In August 1924 he led the single largest rebel unit of the anti-Soviet uprising.

After its defeat he went into exile and died of tuberculosis in France in 1930. In 2005 his remains were reburied at the Mtatsminda Pantheon; for Georgia he remained a symbol of resistance.
