Nikoloz Baratashvili (1817–1845) is the greatest Georgian Romantic poet, who died at 27 and was barely published in his lifetime. Fame came posthumously: his few poems became the summit of Georgian lyric.

His poem «Merani», a hymn to the human will racing against fate, is one of the best-loved works of Georgian literature. In 1938 the poet's remains were moved to the Mtatsminda pantheon.
