Sighnaghi Museum

Kakhetian archaeology and Pirosmani

The Sighnaghi Museum opened in 2007 and belongs to the Georgian National Museum. The building stands on the crest of the hill above the Alazani valley, and its windows show exactly what people come to the town for: the valley and the wall of the Caucasus behind it.

The ground floor is the archaeology of Kakheti: household and cult objects from excavations, from the Stone Age to the first century BC. The upper floor is Pirosmani, one of the main collections of his painting outside Tbilisi.

Sighnaghi itself is part of the display: a town inside an 18th-century wall, built under Erekle II to shelter the surrounding villages from raids.
